This page explains, in plain language, what information The Osoyoos Vote collects, why we collect it, how it's protected, and what choices you have. If anything here is unclear, contact us — details are at the bottom of this page.

The short version: we ask for a photo of your government-issued ID only to confirm you live in Osoyoos and to stop duplicate voting. It's never posted publicly, never shown to other residents, and never sold or shared with advertisers or outside companies. Only the campaign reviews it, and you can ask us to delete it at any time.

What We Collect

When you create an account, we collect the email address and password you choose. Your email is used as your username and to contact you about your account if needed.

When you verify your residency, we collect a photo of a government-issued ID (such as a driver's licence, BC Services Card, or passport) showing your Osoyoos, BC address. This is used only to confirm where you live.

When you vote on a motion, we record which way you voted and associate it with your verified account, so that each resident can only vote once per motion. We do not publish or display your individual vote next to your name — results shown to the public and to other residents are reported only as an aggregate count (for example, "68 of 100 votes cast," or a Yes/No split).

Why We Collect It

The entire point of The Osoyoos Vote is that only real Osoyoos residents get a say, and each resident gets exactly one vote per motion. The ID photo exists to make that verification real rather than something anyone could claim. We don't have a use for this information beyond that — we're not building a marketing list or profiling how you vote.

How It's Stored & Protected

Your ID photo and account information are kept in restricted, access-controlled storage. They are not publicly browsable, not indexed by search engines, and not visible to other residents or to anyone outside the campaign. We do not use a third-party identity-verification vendor to process your ID — a real person on the campaign reviews it directly, so your document isn't passed through an outside company's systems.

No online system can guarantee perfect security, but we limit who can access this data, and we do not retain more of it than we need to run the verification and voting process described here.

How Long We Keep It

We keep your ID photo only as long as needed to verify and maintain your account. If you ask us to delete your account, we'll delete the ID photo along with it. If your registration is ever declined, we delete the submitted photo rather than keep it on file.

Who Can See It

Your ID photo and account details are visible only to the campaign team responsible for verifying residents — not to the Town of Osoyoos, not to other residents, and not to any advertiser or data broker. We do not sell, rent, or trade any information collected through this site.

Your Choices

You can ask us to remove your account and delete your ID photo at any time, for any reason, by contacting us using the details below. You can also ask what information we have on file for you.

Not a Government Service

The Osoyoos Vote is an independent project run by a candidate for Osoyoos town council — it is not operated by, or affiliated with, the Town of Osoyoos or Elections BC. Voting here is not an official municipal ballot; it's a direct way for residents to tell their councillor how they'd like a motion decided, which the councillor has committed to following once enough verified residents have weighed in. See The Commitment for how that works.
